CBA's Netbank goes offline

Mitchell Bingemann | December 04, 2008

A TECHNICAL glitch has crippled Commonwealth Bank's online banking systems, locking out hundreds of thousands of customers from the website.

The outage is the second glitch to affect the bank in less than two weeks.

Since about 9 am, customers logging onto the CBA’s online banking portal, Netbank, have been met with an error screen explaining the site is temporarily unavailable.

The problem was resolved at approximately 11am.

"We're experiencing technical difficulties and are working on identifying the root cause of the problem. The Commonwealth Bank apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause," a CBA spokesperson said.

Transactions can still be processed over the phone or at branch offices, the spokesperson said.

Today's outage is the latest in a spate of computer-related blunders for the Commonwealth Bank.

In late November thousands of dollars disappeared from the accounts of up to 200,000 customers across Australia after transactions were duplicated due to a batching issue.

And in October Centrelink payments to thousands of customers were delayed due to another computer failure.

2 and a half weeks later, And Now I access the netbank page. "Server Not Found" Things are starting to slip!!!

SS I don't think anyone's blaming EDS, in fact the opposite. The fact is after CBA's netbank support was outsourced to India and the EDS team remaining in the CBD and Burwood is minimal, we get these "glitches". C'est la businees vie...

Cousin IT of Burwood 9:03am December 05, 2008

Maybe EDS doesn't even support this anymore. After all the CBA took most apps work off EDS after the end of the 10 yr contract and gave it to another 3 lettered company with a blue background. Worse still, what went to India?

exEDS 9:00am December 05, 2008

Why put the blame on EDS at all. EDS now only look after the infrastructure for CBA. All applications for CBA are now managed offshore in India... With these 3 major outages in the past few months perhaps CBA should have a long hard look at their outsourcing policy.

Vanguard of Sydney 8:39am December 05, 2008

IBM-India (not EDS/HP) is now responsible for this facet of business within the CBA. IBM and other off-shore companies won the contract for CBA's IT work when the EDS' 10-year contract expired last year. This loss of business to EDS is one of the main factors in their recent spate of redundancies.

Good job with the cost cutting.

penny_less of Melbourne 8:44pm December 04, 2008

Which Bank outsourced the Support for Netbank just a few months back away from EDS?

SS of sydney 8:14pm December 04, 2008

bullshit! i still cant login to my commbank online account. the time now is 8.14pm! and they dare to say it was FIXED??!!

notathome of Brisbane 3:23pm December 04, 2008

Why blame EDS - they are the arms and legs and are only as good as the contact engagment, if CBA management are screwing EDS then it will reflect on there staff that work on that project. I suspect you will find the error may have been caused by a cba management numpty pushing there weight around.

Ant.. of Melbourne 2:10pm December 04, 2008

Perhaps they have not heard about running a mirror that's the kind without smoke. My guess is that when you stand between a customer and their money for what ever reason bad press follows soon after. They should be forgiven for their choice of language which is probably all about maintaining customer confidence.

Marc 1:54pm December 04, 2008

leslie: "We're experiencing a major breakdown and are working on identifying the root cause of the BLACK-OUT." good one... its fixed now anyway.

Unit of Sydney 1:30pm December 04, 2008

Agree with Peter... The more job cuts and the constant under cutting of the price to provide the service will alwyas result in a pooere service being provided to the customer. They want better service but want to pay less for it. The job cuts at EDS are terrible.

Pete Zahut of Up-the-Creek 12:12pm December 04, 2008

Mmmm maybe the latest round of Job cuts at EDS an HP Company are begining to take effect on one of their biggest customers ?

Leslie Braun of Gold Coast 12:12pm December 04, 2008

How I love the way these Geeks use everyday English to downplay their stuff-ups. A clitch is defined as 'a minor malfunction'. A glitch can be when a CD jumps or the picture on your TV screen is lost for a split-second. A glitch cannot cripple a country's banking system for hours - That's called a major breakdown! Oh, and while talking about correct terminology, the word 'Outage' has no reference point so call it what it is - A Grey-out, A Brown-out or A BLACK-OUT!
